When the Oakland Raiders lost RB Michael Bush in free agency they were left with a big hole to fill. During the offseason, tackle Bruce Campbell was traded to Carolina for the services of RB Mike Goodson. He had a productive stretch of games when injuries forced him into the starting lineup in 2010 but didn't get much work last season.
He is a shifty RB with very good speed. The knock on him is ball security and boy did it show last night against the Arizona Cardinals. It couldn't have gone much worse for Goodson. On just six carries he managed to lose two fumbles and get injured. He also lost the ball on another carry but luckily for him the referees ruled that his forward progress was stopped, otherwise he would've had a hat trick.
Goodson never looked comfortable out there. He was indecisive and seemed to be stutter stepping instead of putting a foot in the ground and getting upfield. Turnovers will kill you in this league and when you fumble twice on just six attempts, you are pretty much digging your own grave.
The Raiders may want to consider bringing in Ryan Grant to give them a proven backup in the event that Darren McFadden isn't able to go sometime during the regular season. Lonyae Miller has done a solid job of carrying the load so far. Goodson absolutely stunk up the place and third string RB Taiwan Jones has missed the first two games with hamstring injury so bringing another back in the rotation can't hurt.
I don't know how much faith Dennis Allen and Reggie McKenzie have in Goodson. I know it's more than I have in him after that outing; he would have been cut on the way back to Oakland if I was in charge.
Goodson is not the answer and unless the Raiders believe Taiwan Jones is the man behind McFadden, they should consider bringing in somebody.
