Derek Carr Contract: Latest News, Rumors on Negotiations with Raiders

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is putting together an MVP-caliber season on a bargain contract thanks to being a second-round draft pick in 2014, though that could change soon.

Raiders to Focus on Carr Thursday, Dec. 8 Per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, the Raiders are expected to work on signing Carr to a long-term extension before turning their attention to star defender Khalil Mack.

It's a logical move for the Raiders. Though the team drafted both players in 2014, Mack's contract contains a fifth-year option because Oakland selected him in the first round, and the Raiders are almost certain to exercise it before the May 3 deadline.

Carr, on the other hand, has just one year left on his deal after 2016, and he's outplayed his rookie contract with 10,632 yards and 77 touchdowns in his nearly three years in the league. He's also put up a career-high 65.5 completion percentage this season.

Per Spotrac, Carr is making $733,346 in base salary this year and will earn $977,519 in 2017 before modest bonuses. He's started all 44 contests since the Raiders drafted him, and at 10-2, the team is tied with the New England Patriots for the AFC's best record with four games remaining.

The Raiders project to have $41.3 million in cap space in 2017, according to Over the Cap, so they will be able to afford a new contract for Carr.

It's unclear what kind of deal the quarterback wants, with Florio speculating it will likely depend on how far the Raiders go in the playoffs and whether Carr is named the NFL MVP, which would give him more leverage in negotiations.

The Raiders haven't had a quarterback worthy of a long-term extension since Rich Gannon in the early 2000s. There's little doubt Carr will remain with the franchise for a long time, but the price seems to go up with each passing week.
