Gradkowski replaced Campbell during last Sunday’s win over the St. Louis Rams after the offense had begun to sputter under Campbell’s leadership. Under Gradkowski, the team went on to win the game 16-14, beginning yet another quarterback controversy in this young NFL season.
Campbell was just 8-of-15 passing when he was pulled from last week’s game, while also throwing an interception and failing to give the team a balanced passing attack to go with the rushing attack of running back Darren McFadden.
The team seemed to have new life under Gradkowski, and the coaching staff seems to have a sudden belief in his abilities despite the lack of respect they showed him in the offseason.
Gradkowski has started a total of 16 games in his NFL career but will have his first chance to truly take over the team this weekend against the Cardinals.
Jason Campbell, a former first-round pick by the Redskins, was that team’s starter from 2006-2009. After a less-than-stellar 2009 season, Campbell was acquired by the Raiders during the offseason and signed to a contract extension as the team’s supposed quarterback of the future.
Unfortunately for the coaching staff and ownership group that brought him in, Campbell was underwhelming during his short stint as the Raiders’ quarterback, completing just 57.7 percent of his passes and throwing just one touchdown on his way to a disappointing 61.9 quarterback rating.
Though this move does not guarantee that Campbell won’t find himself in the starting lineup again this season, it is certainly not a vote of confidence for the once highly touted quarterback.
