Here was Kobe Bryant, leading his Los Angeles Lakers to their possible second championship in three years, and the story of the day was Larry King’s interview with LeBron James.
During the season, Bryant had to read and hear about how James was the better player, the better leader, and the better talent. Magic Johnson went as far as to say that the torch had been passed on to "King James."
One would think that after the Cleveland Cavaliers got upset in the playoffs for the second straight year as the No. 1 seed, the focus would shift to Kobe—the guy who was, you know, not losing when he was expected to win.
Instead, hoopla around where LBJ would sign ensued and it is still at a fever pitch. Some reporter, who will now be known as a donkey, asked Kobe where he thought LeBron would sign yesterday.
"You’re asking me if LeBron is going to New York?" Bryant told The Post. "I’m trying to tell you in a polite way, I don’t give a [bleep]."
"As a fan, it’s a big deal," Kobe added. "You’re talking about LeBron and Dwyane Wade, it’s two huge names changing cities. It alters things drastically in the NBA. But I really don’t care about it."
ESPN Broadcaster and former Laker Byron Scott was in the vicinity and commented, "Why are people talking about LeBron anyway?" Scott said. "Let me tell you something. From me just knowing Kobe, he doesn’t give a [bleep] what everyone is talking about anyway."
"I couldn’t have said it better," Bryant added.
So I think it’s safe to say that Kobe and none of the players from either Boston or LA care about free agents who failed at winning a championship this season.
Until July 1st, I don’t care either.
