According to ESPN.com's Darren Rovell, the Raiders are attempting to gain exclusive rights to the name for advertising and merchandising purposes on the heels of six previous filings attempting to trademark the same name.
The Raiders have just one year remaining on their lease at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum. Arash Markazi of ESPN later shared images of a potential home for the Raiders in Las Vegas:
After owner Mark Davis fell short in his efforts to move the Raiders back to Los Angeles, he set his sights on Sin City.
Per Matt Youmans of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Davis made it clear in June that he intended to pursue a move to Vegas: "The opportunity came up in Las Vegas, and we're giving it full bore. This is not a pawn in a game. We are serious. Right now, I'm focused on Las Vegas. We think it could make a great marriage with Las Vegas and the Raiders."
Despite Davis' interest, the San Francisco Chronicle (h/t Youmans) reported in June that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was exploring options to block the move to Las Vegas and keep the Raiders in Oakland.
Las Vegas has long been viewed as a pariah in the world of professional sports, but that changed when the NHL awarded it an expansion franchise in June.
That softened stance could play in Davis' favor, and the fact that he is already seeking a trademark in support of a move to Las Vegas suggests he is confident that the NFL will allow him to follow the NHL's lead.
