Tollefson, who for a time was on the Raiders practice squad, will see decent playing time as a rotational rusher, as well as a role on special teams. This acquisition helps to fill the void from losing DE Trevor Scott, the release of DT John Henderson, and the uncertain future with unrestricted free agent DE Jarvis Moss.
Tollefson had solid production in his time with the Giants, with 10 career sacks, 81 tackles and three forced fumbles. The 6'4", 266-pounder has great upside and will have plenty of chances to show his stuff in the Silver and Black.
While this is a lot of money for a backup (especially in cap-strapped Oakland), I think he will be an effective backup and a serviceable spot starter in the event of an injury or a string of poor performances by a starting lineman. With this addition, GM Reggie McKenzie continues to quietly and thriftily stockpile talent in Oakland. I think the 29-year-old Tollefson could also be one of the Raiders that will come up big in 2012.
