Tom Cable led the Raiders to eight wins this season, three more wins than what they have been averaging over the previous seven years. The Raiders seemed headed in the right direction under Cable's guidance, yet Al Davis decided to not pick-up a two-year option he had in his contract.
You can look at a variety of things this past season that cost Tom Cable his dream job as head coach of, his favorite team, the Oakland Raiders. His overall record stands out, but Jamarcus Russell, among other players who weren't dedicated played a big part in that.
I think Cable did relatively well considering the circumstances.
I know one thing that cost Cable his job was his indecision at QB. He waffled back and forth between Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski. The early-season benching likely cost us wins against the Cardinals and Texans, but I think Cable's benching of Jason Campbell for the Dolphins game is where he lost the confidence Al Davis had in him.
You can point your finger at this and point your finger at that, but a missed 32-yard FG by Sebastian Janikowski is what ultimately kept the Raiders from the playoffs, which led to Cable's dismissal.
In fact, Janikowski missed three FGs on the day in a game the Raiders lost by a single point.
I'd hate to blame it on Seabass, but damn.
If he hits one of those three missed FGs, I would be writing about our upcoming playoff matchup. Instead, here we are once again heading into another season with a new head coach.
At least it is going to be a familiar face.
**I know one more win would have got us to just 9-7, still behind the Chiefs, but you better believe we would have beaten the Colts if we were still alive in the playo...
